Found a scratch the morning after collecting your Phuket rental car? What to do

Thailand Rent-a-Car editorial teamReviewed by a Phuket car rental specialist · 4 min read

If you notice a scratch the morning after an evening pickup, notify the rental company promptly and send photographs. Compare it with the handover report and pickup images. If you do not know when the damage occurred, say so: a morning photograph records its presence at that moment, but does not by itself establish whether it predates your rental.

Record what you have found

Take photographs in a safe parking area. Include a wide view of the relevant side of the vehicle, the whole panel and a close-up of the scratch. Check focus and reflections; change your angle if the mark is not visible. Keep the original files, not just copies compressed by a messaging app.

Do not polish or touch up the area before agreeing on this with the rental company. If the issue involves a wheel, glass or another component that raises safety concerns rather than a cosmetic mark, do not continue driving until you have received guidance. For a known incident, follow the rental company's and insurer's reporting instructions; saying that you noticed damage in the morning is not a substitute for reporting an accident.

Describe facts without assigning blame

Explain when you collected the car, when you noticed the mark and which panel is affected. Attach the handover report and relevant pickup photographs. For example: “During a daylight inspection I noticed a scratch on the rear bumper. That area was poorly lit yesterday. I cannot establish when it occurred. I am attaching today's photographs and the pickup records. Please compare them and confirm the next steps in writing.” This is a suggested message, not an account of an actual customer.

If the mark is visible in an original photograph, ask for an agreed correction to the records. If it is not visible, do not assume that this proves there was no damage: the image may have been too dark or taken from an unsuitable angle.

When the evening inspection was incomplete

At pickup, ask for a well-lit location and inspect accessible surfaces with the representative. If you cannot assess part of the bodywork, propose recording that specific limitation instead of stating that there is no damage. Agree on the contact channel, follow-up inspection procedure and deadline for sending evidence. Do not assume all rental companies allow the same reporting period.

Budget UK's guide advises recording inspection limitations caused by poor light or weather and promptly reporting damage discovered during a subsequent check. This is a useful inspection principle, not Thai law or a Thailand Rent-a-Car contract term. Follow the arrangements agreed for your own rental.

Why photographs need a clear reporting channel

A Russian-language Life-trip account describes checking a car with a representative and completing an inspection sheet. In an English-language Reddit discussion, a customer who had scratched a vehicle could not establish the reporting procedure by telephone. These are separate personal accounts, not proof of any company's service quality or misconduct. Our practical takeaway is to save a written contact channel in advance and obtain confirmation that your evidence has been received.

If there is a disagreement

Ask the company to compare the pickup report, both parties' original photographs and the return records. If a charge is proposed, request its contractual basis and calculation, together with an explanation of the applicable insurance cover. Photographs can help reconstruct events, but do not guarantee an automatic resolution.

Keep the agreement, inspection sheet, original images, correspondence and return documents together. Do not publish staff or customer personal details to pressure a company. If you receive no response, use the complaint channel specified in the agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Does a morning photograph prove that a scratch predates the rental?

No. It records the condition at the time it was taken. Pickup photographs, the handover report and correspondence are needed to investigate the circumstances.

Can I simply inspect the car the next morning?

It is better to inspect it at pickup. If that is not possible, agree on and record the limitations, follow-up inspection procedure and reporting deadline in advance.

What should I send the rental company when I find a scratch?

Send a wide view of the relevant side of the car, a photograph of the affected panel, a close-up, the time of discovery and any pickup records. Do not claim to know when the mark appeared if you do not.
